The Senior League World Series will feature five regional teams from the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Maine District 3 champion – the host district. Information on teams will be posted when it becomes available.
Illam Central L.L., Philippines, won the first spot in the 2008 World Series when it beat Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, 7-6 to win the Asia-Pacific regional on July 3. The Philippines was 1-1 in round robin play and 2-1 overall while outscoring opponents 20-19 in Saipan.
Illam Central appeared in the 2006 World Series, going 1-3. Historically, Asia-Pacific teams have gone 7-17 (.292) in the World Series since the series moved to Bangor in 2002.
The Philippines will play in Pool A with Canada, U.S. South, U.S. West, and the Maine District 3 champion. The team’s first game will be at 2:30 p.m., Aug. 10 against the U.S. West champion.
Uniform colors: Navy blue and red.
Vilnius, Lithuania, advanced to the World Series with a 12-2 win over KMC American L.L. of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, in the Europe-Middle East-Africa regional championship game on July 3. Vilnius was 3-0 in round robin play and 4-0 overall while outscoring opponents 47-13 in the EMEA regional, held in Utena, Lithuania.
This will be Vilnius’s second consecutive trip to the World Series in Bangor. The team was 0-4 in last year’s series.
Since the World Series moved to Bangor in 2002, EMEA teams have gone 4-20 (.167).
Lithuania will play in Pool B with U.S. East, U.S. Central, U.S. Southwest, and Venezuela. The team’s first game will be at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 10 against the U.S. East champion.
Uniform colors: orange and black.
Sierra Maestra L.L., from Maracaibo, Venezuela, won the Latin America regional on July 19 with an 8-5 win over Pabao L.L., from Willemstad, Curacao. Venezuela was 3-0 in pool play and 5-0 overall, outscoring opponents 39-15 in the regional, held in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Venezuelan teams have now qualified for four Bangor World Series, including the last three.
In six Bangor World Series, Latin American teams have gone 19-5 (.792) in pool play and 24-8 (.750) overall with championships in 2002 (Pabao L.L., Willemstad, Curacao) and 2006 (Paraguana L.L., Falcon, Venezuela).
Venezuela will play in Pool B with Lithuania, U.S. East, U.S. Central, and U.S. Southwest. Its first game will be at 8 p.m., Aug. 10 against the U.S. Central champion.
Uniform colors: Green and yellow.
Bangor East/West L.L. defeated Brewer 17-2 on July 22 to win the Maine District 3 championship and earn the right to represent the host district in the World Series. Bangor was 4-0 in the double-elimination tournament and outscored opponents 46-13. The team will play the series’ opening game, against Canada, at noon on Aug. 10, and will play in Pool A with Canada, the Philippines, U.S. West and U.S. South.
Maine District 3 teams have gone 4-20 (.167) in the series. This will be Bangor’s fifth appearance as the host. The league is 3-13 (.188), with two wins coming against Canada and one against the 2002 U.S. West representative, East View L.L., of San Pedro, Calif. The U.S. South is the only other regional champ to defeat a U.S. West team in pool play. Uniform colors: Cardinal and gray.
