September 27, 2011 Base running highlights 2011’s record book additions
Easton/Home Run Baker’s (Talbot County, Md.) Chris Bramble’s grand slam on Aug. 15 against Notre-Dame-de-Grace (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) tied the record for most grand slams by a player in a series. Bramble’s slam was the fourth in a Bangor World Series. Notre-Dame-de-Grace’s Liam Wyatt walked four times on Aug. 18 against Friuli Venezia Giulia (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy), breaking the previous record of three walks in a game that was shared by 23 players. Six players in this year’s series tied the record for most stolen bases by a player in one game – 3. Rose Capital East’s (Tyler, Texas) Trace Reed stole three bases on Aug. 14 against Friuli Venezia Giulia. Easton/Home Run Baker’s Brian Delaney stole three bases on Aug. 15 against Notre-Dame-de-Grace. Later that afternoon, Brewer/Orrington’s (Brewer, Maine) Jeremy Bissell added his name to the record, against Friuli Venezia Giulia. On Aug. 17, Bramble put his name on the record, taking three bases against Brewer/Orrington. Then, on Aug. 18, Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Daniele Furlan stole three bases against Notre-Dame-de-Grace.
In all, there were 119 stolen bases in the 2011 series, a record in and of itself, besting the previous high of 99, set in the 2010 series – an increase of 20 percent. Hilo’s (Hilo, Hawaii) Chayce Kaaua set a record for most runs scored in a series by a player, 12. The previous record was 10, set by North Cumberland’s (Upper Deerfield, N.J.) Barry Larro in 2008 and tied by West University’s (Houston, Texas) Michael Resnick in 2009. It should be noted that the online scorers failed to take into account special pinch-runners before the 2006 series, so no run totals for 2002 through 2005 are considered accurate for this record. For teams, Rose Capital East hitters walked 13 times on Aug. 15 against Friuli Venezia Giulia, breaking the old record of 12 walks, set in 2009 by Aruba South (San Nicolas, Aruba) against West University.
Bangor East/West is the only team of the five that did not go on to win the world title. Friuli Venezia Giulia’s pitching staff had the dubious distinction of walking more batters than any other team in a Bangor series – 39. The previous record – 34 – was held by 2009’s West University, which did it in six games compared to Friuli Venezia Giulia’s five games. Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Simone Bazzarini walked eight Rose Capital East batters on Aug. 14, tying the record for most walks by a pitcher in a single game. Printer friendly version
