August 19, 2011 Rose Capital East, Hilo victorious in semifinals Rose Capital East outhits Aruba South in 10-5 semis win
The loss ended Aruba South’s hopes of becoming the first team to repeat as series champs in a Bangor World Series and the first in Senior League Baseball World Series history since Chinese-Taipei repeated in 1992 when the series was in Kissimmee, Fla. All week long, Aruba South manager Milton Croes said his team had not begun hitting to its ability. That appeared to change in the top of the first inning, as the Latin America champ pounced quickly on Rose Capital East starting pitcher Cade Suggs. Eugene Helder hit the second pitch of the game for a double, Wilmer Imperator singled him to third on the next pitch, and Chadwick Tromp hit a sacrifice fly to drive him home, a start to what the rhythmic Aruban crowed hoped would be a strong day offensively. But Imperator was caught too far off first base on a popup from Marc Davies, leading to a double play that ended the inning, with Aruba having only one run to show. Rose Capital East, a vocal crowd of its own on hand all week, backed a short rally th U.S. Southwest champ’s own in the bottom of the inning. Lead-off- hitter Seth Gibson singled, stole second, went to third on a flyout, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mason Mallard that made it 1-1. Helder, Aruba South’s starting pitcher, just didn’t have the same stuff he displayed Tuesday night when he flirted with a perfect game against Northeast/Fraternal Northwest L.L., Midland, Mich. In the bottom of the second, the Texans pounded him with four hits and four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Suggs had an RBI single that broke the 1-1 tie, scoring Asher Boudreaux, a special pinch-runner for Sawyer Dorsey, who led off with a single. Two batters later, Gibson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Braden Nelson, who had reached on an error by the shortstop. Jacob Spitzer hit the next pitch for a two-run double that scored Suggs and Tanner Bandel (single). Aruba South put two runners on base in the top of the fourth, but couldn’t score.
The U.S. Southwest champ answered with four more runs in the bottom of the inning, with Dorsey delivering a two-run triple and Tanner Bandel a two-run double for the biggest hits of the inning. Aruba South added two, two-out runs in the sixth inning when Helder singled home Miklos Petronia (lead-off single) and Brown (reached on an error by the third baseman). The defending champs tried to force matters in the seventh after Danies reached on a one-out walk. Helder came back into the game as a special pinch-runner for Danies and stole second. But after Petronia struck out swinging, Helder tried to steal third with Raypatrick Didder hitting. He was thrown out, ending the game. For Rose Capital East, Spitzer was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Mallard was 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, and a run. Dorsey was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run. Suggs was 2-for-3 with two runs. For Aruba South, Helder was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Jason Gysbertha was 2-for-3 with a run. The Hilo team (5-0 overall in the series) put on an impressive offensive display in the contest, which was briefly interrupted by thunder after the top of the first inning, leading to a mandatory 30-minute delay. Hilo finished with 11 hits, led by Korin Medeiros, who smacked a two-run triple to left in the third inning to highlight a three-run rally and singled home two more runs in the fourth inning during a five-run rally that allowed the U.S. West regional champions to take control of the game. Kean Wong also continued his strong series at the plate, smacking three singles and driving in a run. Quintin Torres-Costa added two singles, while Davey Camacho’s single in the bottom of the fifth brought home Chay Tosen with the game-ending run. Cayce Kaaua doubled home two runs in the fourth, while Kolten Yamaguchi doubled and Chad Teshima singled.
Marco Mari led off the game for Friuli Venezia Giulia with a single, while Davide Bertoldi singled in the fourth. Starting pitcher Simone Bazzarini struck out two, walked two and hit two batters before leaving the game with an injury in the fourth inning. The game marked the end of a stirring run for the Italian team (3-2), which became the first Europe-Middle East-Africa regional champion to reach the semifinals since the Senior League World Series has been played in Bangor. They earned their semifinal berth by finishing 3-1 in pool play, with wins over Notre-Dame-de-Grace Little League of Montreal, Quebec, Canada (13-7), and Easton/Home Run Baker Little League of Talbot County, Md. (9-8), on the final day of pool play. Post game audio: Friuli Venezia Giulia Printer friendly version
