August 15, 2011 Hilo holds on for 4-3 win over Aruba South
Hilo scored a run in the first on a lead-off single by Chayce Kaaua, a wild pitch, a single by Kean Wong, and another wild pitch, then added three more runs in the third. In the third, Kaau again led off with a single, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, and scored on a single by Korin Liedeiros. Kodi Medeiros singled home Kolten Yamaguchi, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, to make it 3-0. An RBI single by Kaimana Moike made it 4-0. In the bottom of the third, Aruba South hitters waited on Hilo starting pitcher Kaimana Moike, with Eugene Helder and Raypatrick Didder drawing one-out walks. Chadwick Tromp then hit a long fly ball to left-center field that landed on the warning track about 360 feet from home plate. Helder and Didder scored and Tromp raced to third for a stand-up triple. Marc Danies followed with a single, scoring Tromp and putting the Arubans within one run, 4-3. Aruba South had scoring opportunities in the fourth and sixth innings, but ended up stranding runners at first and second bases in the fourth and leaving the bases loaded in the sixth. Hilo had four hitters with two hits each, as Kaaua was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, KeanWong was 2-for-4, Liedeiros was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and K Medeiros was 2-for-3 with one RBI. On the mound for Hilo, Moike lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on two hits, with six strikeouts and five walks. For Aruba South, Tromp led the way with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with the two-run triple. On the mound, starting pitcher Jadimir Kwidama gave up four runs – three earned – on seven hits in only 2 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked three. In relief, Pedro Rangel pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing one hit while striking out seven and walking none. Didder pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one. For Brewer/Orrington, feelings just short of frustration and hopelessness had only moments earlier turned to joy, as the host team had come all the way back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to take a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Sloppy defense by Brewer/Orrington in the first inning enabled Friuli Venezia Giulia to score four runs on only two hits, as Brewer/Orrington fielders committed five errors in the inning. None of the four runs Friuli Venezia Giulia scored in the inning was earned. Brewer/Orrington retired 10 Italian batters in a row after the disasterous first innning before Friuli Venezia Giulia got two singles in the bottom of the fifth but failed to score. In the top of the fifth, Brewer/Orrington scored its first run when Spencer Valley drew a one-out walk, stole second and third bases, and scored on a fielder’s choice. In the sixth, the host sent 10 batters to the plate while getting four hits. All five runs scored after two outs. Ian Forrest singled with one out and gave way to special pinch-runner Dan Davis, who advanced to second on a single by Zach Violette. John Hand put down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Davis and Violette to third and second for Valley. Valley walked to load the bases and Kyle Alexander hit a two-run single that cut Italy’s lead to 4-3. After Alexander stole second, Jeff Weeks reached on an error by the second baseman. Valley and Alexander scored to give Brewer/Orrington a 5-4 lead. Weeks stole second with Matt Morrow batting and scored on a Jeremy Bissell single, making it 6-4 in Brewer/Orrington’s favor. Friuli Venezia Giulia made up a run in the bottom of the inning after Tonzar reached on a lead-off single, went to second on a wild pitch, tagged up and advanced to third on a flyout to center field by Enrico Varin, and came home on a single by Alessandro Deotto.
After a flyout by Davide Bertoldi put the host within one out of winning its second game, Tonzar lashed his game-winning single on a 1-1 pitch. For Friuli Venezia Giulia, Tonzar led all batters at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Furlan was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. On the mound, starting pitcher M Mari didn’t get a decision, but pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out three and walking four. He threw 91 pitches. Tonzar got the win in relief, pitching the last 1 1/3 innings, giving up no hits and allowing no runs while walking one and striking out one. For Brewer/Orrington, Bissell was 2-for-3 at the plate, with one RBI. Forrest was 2-for-4. Lead-off hitter Alexander was 1-for-4, but scored a run and had three RBIs. On the mound, Weeks pitched 6 1/2 innings, giving up eight hits and allowing seven runs. Only three runs were earned. He walked none and struck out three. Bramble’s blast was the first home run of this year’s series and the fourth grand slam in a Bangor World Series. Playing its first game of the series, Easton/Home Run Baker quickly scored two runs in the top of the first inning, with Brian Delaney drawing a one-out walk and stealing second before teammate Chance Crissinger could get into the batter’s box to hit next. Crissinger singled Delaney to third and stole second, setting the stage for Dustin Jones to follow with a two-run single. Notre-Dame-de-Grace countered with a run in the bottom of the first after Liam Wyatt doubled, went to third on an error by the first baseman, and scored on a wild pitch. Easton/Home Run Baker continued putting pressure on Notre-Dame-de-Grace, pushing three more runs across the plate on two hits and three Notre-Dame-de-Grace errors in the second inning to make it 5-1. After tacking on single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it 7-1, Easton/Home Run Baker pounded out five hits and stole two bases in scoring eight more runs before Notre-Dame-de-Grace could get an out. Oliver Singson hit a 364-foot home run to left-center field just over the Little League Teenage Baseball banner on the fence to make it 15-2 in favor of the U.S. East champ. But that was all the Canadians could get. At the plate for Easton/Home Run Baker, Jones was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored. Taylor Slaughenoupt was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. On the mound, Delaney pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up one run on one hit and five walks. He struck out two. Brian Shaw pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He struck out three. Wyatt led Notre-de-Grace at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Post game audio: Easton/Home Run Baker Northeast/Fraternal Northwest begins play with 7-5 win over Palm Bay East Travis Walker’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning brought home teammate Logan Madill with the go-ahead run to lead the Northeast/Fraternal Northwest L.L. to a 7-5 win over Palm Bay East in Pool B play Monday. The Midland, Mich.-based team received contributions from many sources to secure the win in its first Pool B game of the, including winning pitcher Ryan Singer, who retired all five batters he faced in 1 2/3 innings. After Palm Bay East’s Matt Rose smashed a two-run double to left center to give his team a 2-0 lead in the first, Northeast/Fraternal Northwest, the U.S. Central regional champion, struck for five runs in the second inning, highlighted by Chase Toland’s bases-clearing double and Michael Wright’s run-scoring single. Palm Bay East, the two-time defending U.S. Southeast champion, chipped away at the lead, though. Matthew Meyer’s two-run single in the bottom of the second cut the lead to 5-4 and C.J. Goldsmith’s double to left tied the game at 5-5. The game remained a stalemate until the seventh, when Midland struck twice, as Robert Ellebracht followed Walker’s sacrifice fly with an RBI single of his own. Ellebracht was Midland’s only repeat hitter, finishing with two singles and an RBI, while Elliott Digison also drove in a run.
