St. Louis Cardinals sign ’07 alumnus Wong

Kolten Wong, who played for Hilo American/National L.L., Hilo, Hawaii, in the 2007 World Series, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball amateur draft. Wong was the 22nd overall pick on June 6, the highest selection of any Bangor World Series alumnus.

A second baseman, Wong just finished his junior year at the University of Hawaii.

In the 2007 Senior League Baseball World Series, Wong primarily caught for Hilo, but also logged four innings at second base. At the plate, he went 7-for-13 (.538), with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs (1.308 slugging percentage).

The Cardinals assigned Wong to the Quad Cities River Bandits (Davenport, Iowa) in the Single-A Midwest League. Through July 11, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound infielder, who bats left-handed and throws right-handed, was hitting .302 with one home run and eight RBIs in 14 games.
