Subway’s Jared stresses healthy eating; Saipan wins sportsmanship award

After the games, the annual awards banquet was held at the Bangor Civic Center, with Jared Fogle, who lost 245 pounds 11 years ago eating Subway sandwiches and making lifestyle and diet changes, serving as the keynote speaker.

He charged the players in the crowd to remain active and realize they hold a special place in their communities.

“You guys are the role models here,” Fogle told the players. “You never know how life will go.”

Also, the Saipan Little League team, the Asia-Pacific regional champions, were presented with the Daniel E. Clifford Sportsmanship Award, named after the late Clifford, who served as the assistant tournament director from when the World Series began its Bangor run in 2002 until his sudden death in 2007.

The award goes to the team who best exemplifies “Danny’s Way”: Play hard, play fair and have fun.

“That’s what we tried to do,” Sapian Manager Jonathan Tenorio said at the awards banquet.
