Host Bangor East/West finally gets 2nd win in a single series

A historic win by Maine District 3 host Bangor East/West L.L. capped off the day’s first three games, in which offense ruled the day.

The District 3 champions received consistent offense and another dominating pitching performance to ease past Lazio, Italy, 13-0 in five innings, improving to 2-0 in World Series play.

This is the first time a District 3 team has won two games in one World Series since the event came to Bangor in 2002. Last year was the closest a Maine District 3 had come to winning two games, as Bangor defeated Canada on opening day but fell to the U.S. Southeast champions and U.S. West champions in extra innings in the last two days of pool play.

Offensively, Christian Corneil (triple, single, three RBIs) , Anthony Capuano (two singles, one RBI) led the charge, while Luke Hetterman (two-run triple) and Jacob Searles (two-run single) had key blows to highlight a seven-run fourth inning rally that put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Curtis Worcester retired all 12 batters he faced and joined with Tyler LaPlante to fire a one-hitter as Bangor tossed its second straight shutout.

Italy’s Roberto Colaianni broke up the perfect game with a one-out double to left in the fifth inning.

Manhattan Beach turns back Aruba south in eight innings

Ryan Erickson’s bat proved to be pivotal for Manhattan Beach, Calif., as the U.S. West Regional champions improved to 2-0 with a thrilling 5-3, eight-inning win over Aruba South in the nightcap of the second day of pool play at the 2010 Senior League World Series.

Erickson’s two-run double to left in the fourth gave Manhattan Beach a 2-1 lead, and his two-run double to left center in the eighth provided some needed insurance.

Turner Conrad started the eighth inning by reaching on a bunt single, moved to second on a Bret Collins single, took third on Brett Clark’s bunt single and scored on a wild pitch to break a 2-2 tie.

Jiandido Tromp doubled home Jermain Manuel to give Aruba South a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, while Chadwick Tromp drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, forcing home Jose Luis Gonzales, to tie the game at 2-2.

Jiandido Tromp (two singles) and Milton Croes (two singles, run scored) led the Aruban offense.

Holmes County, Ohio, rolls over Palm Bay, Fla., 12-0

Holmes County, of Ohio, the U.S. Central region champion, started its World Series experience with a 12-2, six-inning win over Palm Bay East, Fla., in the first game of the day, pounding out 15 hits.

Despite the offensive outburst, though, it was Palm Bay, for a second straight day, who scored the game’s first run. The U.S. Southeast regional champion took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Matt Rose’s RBI double, which scored Matt Myer, who had reached on a one-out walk.

Holmes County tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Grant Troyer scored on B.J. Miller’s infield single, then took the lead for good in the fourth on Grant Troyer’s two-run single.

Holmes County broke the game open by scoring four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Leading the Holmes County offense were Brandon Wengard (three singles), Grant Troyer (two singles, two RBIs), Ryan Troyer (two singles), Richie Mast (double, single, two RBIs), Luke Burch (two singles) and B.J. Miller (two singles, RBI).

Gardner Knight singled twice and scored a run for Palm Bay, while Andrew Guzman singled twice and drove in a run.

South Vineland, N.J., too much for Canada’s Park East

South Vineland, N.J., scored in each of its five at-bats in a 10-0, five-inning win over East Park L.L., of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in the U.S. East champ’s pool play opener, unleashing a 12-hit attack that featured the tournament’s first home run.

Carlos Lebron hit a two-run homer in the fourth, which eventually landed in the pool beyond the left field fence, while teammates Christian Adorno (three singles) and Andrew Briggs (two singles, double, two RBIs) provided support.

Vineland pitcher Brandon Triantos held the Canadian champions at bay throughout, allowing just two hits – a first inning single to Alex Cordingley and a third inning double to Clay Davis – and no walks in five innings of work. He closed the game with a pair of strikeouts.
